The Boss Task Seat is a good Budget option. With a relatively small seat and backrest, this chair is perfect for cramped spaces. Many Amazon reviewers said they liked this chair because it was able to be slid under a desk if needed. Amazon reviewers also noted how easily this chair is assembled. While most reviewers said that they were pleasantly surprised by how well this chair holds up given it’s price, others noted that height-adjustment mechanism is not as strong and occasionally fails. Still, it has maintained a 4.2 out of 5 stars after over 200 reviews.

The WorkPro Commercial Mesh office chair gives you the comfort and innovation of a Premium at less than half price of our Premium recommendation. With a suspended mesh back and adjustable lumbar support for the lower back, this chair can be sat in for 8 hours or more per day. The Aeron by Herman Miller is considered by most to be the cadillac of the office chair world. Highly innovative, the chair utilizes a woven suspension membrane that eliminates pressure points by distributing weight evenly. The seat has a “waterfall” edge which  takes the pressure off the back of your thighs. Plus, the chair comes with a 12-year warranty. Amazon reviewers gave this the highest rating of our mid-back office chairs at 4.4 out of 5 stars.

At the Budget price point, our pick for the Executive Office Chair is the Lorell Executive High-Back Chair. Its mesh back keeps thing breathable and the height adjustable lumbar support gives your lower back the support you need. Note: this chair has a 250 lb weight capacity.  Almost 80% Amazon reviewers gave this chair 4 stars or better with many says that is was comfortable, easy to assemble, and a total bargain.

Flash Furniture is the creator of the Wooden Ergonomic Kneeling Posture Chair. This unique design by Flash Furniture is highly spoken of by chiropractors. It’s also one of the best sellers on Amazon. Clearly, this odd looking contraption has been delivering results to some folks. If you really want to take care of your back, or are already experiencing persisting back pain, it’s a great secondary chair to have alongside your main office chair to utilize every so often.

The HVL210 gives you the most comfort and versatility for the price. The chair has features usually not seen in task chairs, like center-tilt control and adjustable tension. The seat and back are both contoured and have comfortable double layered cushions. While some assembly is required the majority of Amazon reviewers say it is easy to put together. Also, Amazon reviewers give the HVL210  4.3 stars out of 5 with over 560 reviewers contributing.

Rani Lueder recommends testing out a new chair for at least 30 minutes, in the type of setting you’d be using it in at home or in the office. That last part is crucial. Ideally, you’ll want to bring your laptop to Design Within Reach or some other dealer, zero in on a few contenders, pull ’em up to a desk, and knock out a few emails. Yes, doing this requires a bit more of an effort than sorting Amazon search results or driving down the street to Office Max and settling on the first seat that seems like a decent fit, but when you’re talking about a product that could well be in your life longer than your current pet or significant other, an afternoon of butt testing seems prudent.

December 23, 2015: After a year of testing, our new office chair pick is the Steelcase Gesture. It has a wider range of adjustments than any other chair. If the Gesture isn't available, we recommend our previous pick, the Steelcase Leap. If you are prone to perspiring, we recommend the Herman Miller Aeron, which has a mesh back and seat. And if you can't spend $900-plus on an office chair, the IKEA Markus is a good bargain.

Good ergonomics are not inherently expensive, and expensive does not necessarily guarantee good ergonomics. The basic principles that have guided chair design for the past several decades have to some extent trickled down to the lesser chairs of the world. You could find a chair that makes good ergonomic sense for you at the office-supply store down the street, but it is less likely, and many big-box-store chairs have limited adjustability. All of the experts we talked to at length agreed that, for people who can afford it, investing in a high-end office chair is a better bet. As Alan Hedge of Cornell told us, “There’s the old saying ‘You get what you pay for.’ That’s very true in chairs.”

Deciding between an update for our rigs or a new office chair is an easy decision. The PC component usually wins out every time. We get it, the chair typically doesn’t even factor into the decision making process. Who’s to blame? That new Nvidia graphics card needs to find its home in your PC. But consider this: a good office chair could last you over a decade. Furthermore, your comfort level is an essential part of successfully ascending to gaming utopia.

The Professional Air Grid Back with Leather Seat Chair by Office Star is a solid, well-put-together chair that looks great in any office set up. Adjustable arms, tilt tension, and height facilitate healthy sitting posture. Soft arm-pads and industrial strength wheels round out this chair nicely.

AmazonBasics also offers this mid-back chair in a mesh version, at a slightly reduced cost. The mesh model is actually the best selling version of the AmazonBasics office chair line. The mesh option is a wise idea for those gamers who do not prefer the warmth of leather. The arm rest design gives the chair a less sturdy look, but overall this chair is just as capable as the leather mid-back edition.

If you’re on the hunt for a side and/or guest chair (or just want a chair without wheels) the Flash Black Leather Guest Chair fits the bill. It has a classy black finished frame and the seat cushions come in four color variations. The cushions are contoured and textured enhancing the aesthetic nicely. It is light weight making it easy to move around your desk or to another room. The cushions are thick and the arm-rests are padded to provide maximum comfort. For about $60 you will receive a professional looking, sturdy, comfortable office chair that will please any co-pilot or spectator.

Even so, we can say that certain features and behaviors in a chair are good or bad. In general, a more adjustable chair will ensure a better fit and a greater likelihood of promoting good postures. You can also find some less-conventional chair styles that might be better suited for certain users. People who suffer from back pain, Lueder explained, might benefit from a chair that gently rocks instead of reclines, or a stool-chair hybrid that allows for a more open thigh-torso angle.

For taller individuals, the AmazonBasics High-Back Executive Chair may be a better fit. This version of the chair comes in two color variations: brown and black. It is a step up from the AmazonBasics Mid-Back chair in build quality, but is still limited in the adjustment mechanism department. You get the pneumatic height adjustment and tilt-tension knob underneath the seat (allowing you to make it easier or harder to rock back in the chair) but that’s it. Nevertheless, the bonded leather covering sufficient padding, sturdy casters, curved contours, and well-built arms makes this chair a nice value proposition at the near $100 price point.
