In principle, all tree species can be branched. Good quality and vigorous stocks are worthy of branching, which can be expected in harvest-old diameter, in which the ratio of a knot-free coat to the knotty core is at least 2: 1. Holdings with increased risks, e.g. B. by storm, rot, snow, fragrance, peeling u. a. should not be branched. In the case of dead-tree species, green branches are generally required for the production of valuable wood. This applies in particular to trees that are largely grown. Best Pole Saw
Timely branching is decisive for the result. The green branches should not exceed 3 cm. The length of the green crown must still be 40–50% of the tree height after the branching in order to avoid the risk of water rice formation and social descent. For the same reason, the branched trees must be cleared when competing with other trees. If the branches are carefully planted, generally no problems with wood-destroying fungi can be expected if the branches are not too thick (see below) and barked with a smooth-cutting tool (Fig. 2a) or if the branches are cut onto an astringent ring (Fig. 2b).
It is important that the entire branch is removed (no stubbing!). Shape cuts are usually superfluous. In young tree populations with few trees, however, debris or steep load cuts can be useful. Branch measures are to be planned carefully and carried out with care. A written work order is a prerequisite for targeted implementation and control.

To be carried out for upper heights from approx. 12 m (BHD approx. 15–18 cm), for Douglas firs a little earlier (from approx. 10 m), otherwise the base diameter and overgrowth periods can become too large.
Branching to 10 m
Because of the necessary ratio of knotty core to knot-free coat of 1: 2 and a required braid diameter of at least 40 cm, this only makes sense if breast height diameters of approx. 65 cm can be achieved. This is normally to be expected with Douglas fir, with other conifer species only at very efficient locations.
