Wichita State University ‘GoBabyGo!’ program is sponsored by the College of Engineering and involves the modification of toy cars for kids with a particular disability at no cost. Following our group meeting with children and families, we identified various needs that required to be addressed. We decided to focus on Brantley who was diagnosed of Spina Bilfida by modifying a toy car for her to enable her to move around as she desired and in turn live a normal life as other children.
Our group decided to embark on the car assembly stage and first met in the class for one hour and also attend the EEB 105 lab every class on Thursday to complete the work. We installed a big red switch and a killer switch on the toy car and also rewired everything to make sure that the car was appropriate for use by the child. At the assembly stage of the car, it was necessary to specify the design requirements, create a budget and also identify the required materials. We chose to work on a pink jeep fitted with an opening and closing door. We then embarked on the assembling activities until completion. We worked on the task from Thursday, September 28 to Thursday, October 26th every week devoting one day to the work.
Evaluative thinking
As we worked on the assembling of the car, I realized that I did not fully benefit from the group work since two members dominated in the physical tasks. Since we are a group of four, I realized that I had to be actively involved in the car assembly task to ensure that I participate fully and also advance my skills in the field. Another limitation I identified regards the timeframe we had initially set to complete the work which was not adequate. I shared the concern of the group members, and we decided to take roles in phases such that each person worked on a specific task which all contributed to the overall completion of the work.
Divergent thinking
There was a need to evaluate our progress throughout the service learning project duration. I realized that the aim of modifying a car for use by Brantley could not be effectively realized without active research on other modified cars and specifically on the challenges faced and how they were overcome. From the research, I learned that our group needed to be more creative and focused by having specific targets to meet on every day we met and also be quick to make design changes where necessary. The strategy would ensure that we have a flexible design with the input of the information acquired from research and also the specifications shared with the child’s mother and physical therapist.
Convergent thinking
I learned the essence of teamwork in a group project and also the need to gather adequate details about an activity before embarking on it. Teamwork was necessary for us to deliver a quality modified car and also which caters for the challenges faced by the child.
