Keeping skin hydrated and supple during the winter months takes more work than usual. You want skin soft and feel smooth. Dry, cracked skin can be painful and causes makeup to do more harm than good when it comes to your looks. Stick to simple tried-and-true tips when saving your skin during the winter season.

1) Drink plenty of water. Water keeps you hydrated, inside and out. Eight glasses per day is what’s recommended for your health, but when you throw dry air into the mix, your body and skin need more. About 10-12 glasses of water a day will keep skin soft and moisturized. Turning on the heat creates dry air in many homes during the cold winter months. Combat that by loading up on water in the day and before bed, so skin stays soft while you’re getting sleep.
2) Moisturize multiple times per day. Depending on your skin type, you may need to moisturize multiple times per day. Everyone, regardless of skin type, should moisturize twice per day – once in the morning and once in the evening. If you have dry skin or normal to dry skin (which is usually drier during the cold weather months), you may need to moisturize during the day too. This can be done with a lightweight moisturizer that won’t mess up your makeup. A moisturizer with a lotion consistency can be applied at the sides of the nose and the chin, then blended out. You can also mist your face with water from an aerosol-style can. This puts a light layer of moisture on your face and you can lock it in by following up with a moisturizer. Those with very dry skin should use a heavy moisturizer at night. Make sure it is a thick cream with a whipped or dense consistency and apply the moisturizer liberally. In the morning, always allow your moisturizer to soak in before applying makeup. This can take up to 10 minutes, so make sure applying moisturizer is the first thing you do.
3) Skip heavy powders and foundations. Dry skin craves moisture. This won’t come from heavy powders and foundations, which can seep into the cracks or increase dryness in skin. Instead, stick to a tinted moisturizer for your makeup routine. Mineral powders are a great way to decrease shine without drying skin. Apply light layers and focus on areas that need coverage versus loading product onto every part of your face just for the sake of doing so.
