Introduction

Database Administrator (DBA) is an Information Technology (IT) professional who deals with the performing activities related to maintaining database environments (Kreines, & Laskey, 1999). The database administrator has the capabilities of designing and implementing database management systems using a specific programming language. He should have a clear understanding of the maintenance of the database systems. The database administrator should have the capability of establishing the IT policies and procedures that govern the database management systems (Kreines, & Laskey, 1999).. The database administrator should have high skills in maintaining database security. He should have the potential of setting and configuring security parameters in the databases (Kreines, & Laskey, 1999).. The database administrator must have a high capability of delivering information to facilitate training to the users who have no idea of the database managements systems. The database administrator should always keep updated with the emerging trends and technologies within the IT sector. He should understand the design technologies. Similarly, the database administrator should have the high-level capability of learning different database management structures like the Structured Query Language (SQL), SAP and the Oracle-based database management systems (Kreines, & Laskey, 1999).

The duties and responsibilities of database administrator include performing the database server administration by ensuring availability of the servers like the MS SQL server, the file server the proxy server and the web server among other servers (Freeman, & Pack, 2014). The database administrator has the tasks of monitoring the database operations like the tuning of the repository settings, changes in the schema-based databases, scheduling of backup tasks, controlling the automatic operations like data warehousing, data mining, and alerts (Freeman, & Pack, 2014). The database administrator has the responsibility of performing the fault tolerance checks within the database systems by ensuring troubleshooting and the correction of problems and interruptions that occur within the operational database. The database administrator should have high knowledge in designing evaluating, and testing of the new database systems through the application of the MS QL server, the MS Access, the ADO DOT net, the ASP DOT Net and the Visual Studio (Freeman, & Pack, 2014).

The database administrator should be eloquent in database technologies like relational database management systems (RDBMS) with proper operations that combine the MS QL server technology. The database administrator should have the capability of setting and configuring different versions of database systems and operating systems like the SQL2000, SQL 2005 the Microsoft server 2005, SQL2008 R2 and the Windows Server 2003 to windows server 2008 (Freeman, & Pack, 2014). The database administrator must have a clear understanding of the professional standards and the architectural standards that govern database administration process. The database administrator must be conversant with the three database development levels that include the external conceptual and the internal levels. The database administrator must have clear guidelines and ability to adhere to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standard Planning and Requirement Committee (SPARC) (Chaganti, & Helms, 2010). All Database administrators must follow the protocols and standards specified by the international standards.

 

Methodology

Action Research

Action research refers to the process of learning and acting (McDonnell, & McNiff, 2014). Action research involves interacting with the theoretical environment and presenting the outcome and results in practical social aspects. The entire process of learning involves having interactions with intellectuals while pursuing inquiry about the subject matter of the study. Action research is a collaborative study where researcher gathers information knowledge and understanding to influence change in the society (McNiff,  & Whitehead, 2001). The various stages are involved in the action research since it is continuous evaluations of events to obtain the perfect results in long learning. Action research is a systematic study that involves the planning phase, the action phase, the observing phase and the reflection phase (McDonnell, & McNiff, 2014).

The History of Action Research

Action research is associated with a philosopher and a social scientist by the name Kurt Lewin. Lewin invented action research in 1970 (Reason, & Bradbury, 2001). The methodology remained dormant until 1976. It was until 1976 when the term action research was officially used in research conducted by Lewin (McNiff,  & Whitehead, 2001). Lewin applied the methodology in studying the social differences among the warring societies. Lewin involved researchers who interacted with the members of the society to enquire about the different social matters (McNiff,  & Whitehead, 2001). The Lewin results proved that the methodology could be used to change social status of different people with social differences. Lewin methodology involved a series of spiral stages that formed a circle. According to Lewin action research involved series of step by step process including the planning stage, the action stage, the evaluation stage and the analysis of the results of action research (McNiff,  & Whitehead, 2001). The methodology gained popularity and was implemented by other scientists and philosophers in bringing improvements in the education sector, the business sector, and the social science. The education sector got improved through action research methodology was applied in modifying the education curriculum to incorporate social maters like sports, games and music (McDonnell, & McNiff, 2014).. Since then action research contributed to the invention of other scientific research methodologies which incorporated the characteristics of the action research.

The Relevance of Action Research

Action research methodology shall support my career as the database administrator by assisting me in carrying out systematic learning of different technologies, new techniques of conducting database management as well as the methodologies of designing and implementing modern database structures. The study process shall enhance better performance through interacting with the database experts. The action research model is ways of learning that shall enable me to acquire knowledge, skills, and experience in the managing different types of database. The acquired knowledge shall enrich me with the ability to configure the setting of database servers as well as the configurations of the security settings to protect data and information. Action research process is the methodology of implementing changes. The methodology shall enhance easy incorporation of changes to the databases. The methodology supports the incorporation of new ideas, innovations and inventions hence facilitating easy implementation of new improvements. The software upgrading and hardware upgrading operations get effectively accomplished through systematic approach supported by the action research. The development of research proposed projects shall get better implementation through the action research methodology due to better support for modular development of activities. Finally, the methodology is the best in determining the future technology support that will facilitate better compatibility with the existing software and hardware devices.
