Plagiarism is the wrongful publication of another author’s word, thoughts, and ideas and presenting them as the original work. Plagiarism is a serious offense and an act of fraud. The US laws protect a person’s original ideas under copyright laws. A person’s ideas and thoughts amount to intellectual property just like original inventions. It is critical for writers to give credit to authors whose works have contributed to the completion of an assignment or another written piece. When completing an assignment, for instance, students should ensure that they provide a complete citation for sections that they have picked from other authors. Students must understand the severity of plagiarism so that they comprehend the importance of presenting original assignments.

Writing non-plagiarized papers enables a student, to enhance his creativity (Ratliff, 2006). The ease of writing non-plagiarized paper becomes an easy and fun activity rather than a task. Students should master the art of paraphrasing i.e. reading through another author’s work and picking the ideas for an assignment. Effective paraphrasing enables a student to write academic pieces that are free off plagiarism.
